TRUCK ASSISTS ON MONESSEN FIRE
9/16/09-- Just before 11am, Monessen companies were dispatched for a house on fire at 607 Summit Avenue.  Chief 81 arrived, confirmed the dispatch, and requested Truck 105 and Engine 140 (Belle Vernon) added to the alarm.  Truck 105 arrived and set up on Summit Avenue to protect the "B" side exposure.  As the fire was brought under control through an aggressive attack by crews from 81 and the exposure threat lessened, The Truck's crew was sent to assist with overhaul on the 2nd floor.  Crews operated on scene for just over one hour and no injuries resulted from the fire.
     

RESCUE EXTRICATES ONE ON RT 51
8/30/09-- A late night crash on Route 51 sent a motorist to a Pittsburgh trauma center.  Station 105 was alerted just after 2am for a rollover accident on Route 51 near the Comfort Inn.  Rostraver Police and fire officers arrived and confirmed the driver entrapped and not responsive.  The Rescue Truck arrived and used the Hurst® Jaws of Life and cutters to free the victim.  Rostraver EMS transported the patient to a landing zone at their Sweeney Plan base.  Rescue 31 (Webster) handled the LZ, which also included a second helicopter summoned to transport the victim from a vehicle/pedestrian accident in South Huntingdon Twp, whose condition had apparently worsened during ground transport.
    

TRUCK CRASH WITH HAZARDS
8/4/09-- The Rescue Truck was dispatched for an MVA on I-70 East near Exit 43.  The accident was located near Mile 42.5 involving a tractor-trailer and dump truck towing a trailer.  EMS determined there were minor injuries and no parties were transported.  Crews from 105 and PennDOT controlled hazards while the Interstate was closed for a short time.  Rescue 31 (Webster) arrived, as the incident was in their zone, and also assisted with clearing the highway.  PA State Police, Rostraver Barracks, are investigating.
     

CYCLIST KILLED ON ROUTE 906
7/20/09-- Rostraver Police are investigating a crash this morning on Route 906.  Rescue 105 was activated in place of Rescue 31 (Webster) for an MVA involving a motorcycle.  Personnel arrived and assisted EMS with the patient, who was ejected into a rock fall basin over 75 feet from the impact.  Rostraver/West Newton EMS took the patient to the Webster Ballfield, where Engine 31 had established a landing zone.  Unfortunately, the victim succumbed to his injuries after arriving at a Pittsburgh hospital.  The Rescue Truck controlled a small gasoline spill at the scene and stood by while police and the County Forensics Unit processed the scene.
   

4 INJURED IN ROUTE 51 CRASH
7/11/09-- Rescue 105 responded for a two-car crash on Route 51 at Finley Road.  One driver was confined in the vehicle and extricated using the Hurst® Jaws of Life.  Rostraver/West Newton EMS transported that patient to a nearby landing zone to be treated at a Pittsburgh trauma center.  Three other patients were transported by units from R/WNES, Mon Valley EMS, and Sewickley Twp. EMS.  Station 17 (Smithton) assisted at the landing zone.
   

LENITY SCHOOL RD HOUSE FIRE
7/10/09-- A house was destroyed by a fast-moving fire at 448 Lenity School Road.  Township companies were activated just before 5pm for a reported fire on a porch.  Truck 105 arrived first, finding a fully-involved fire in a 2-story house.  Engine 105 arrived next and crews began a defensive operation to protect the neighboring house.  Units from 31 (Webster), 103 (Collinsburg), and 80 (North Belle Vernon) subsequently arrived and assisted with extinguishing the fire.  The house was a total loss.  Rescue 11 (Sutersville) provided a Rapid Intervention crew and Station 192 (Gallitin-Sunnyside) was moved from standby at Station 31 to assist with overhaul.  The PA State Police Fire Marshal has ruled the fire undetermined in nature, but not suspicious.

I-70 CHAIN REACTION CRASH
6/16/09-- Parties involved in an I-70 crash somehow escaped serious injury despite severe damage to the vehicles involved.  At approximately 7:30am, vehicles apparently reacting to police activity on the highway near Mile 43 West were involved in a crash.  One vehicle sustained catastrophic damage after it was struck by a tractor trailer.  Crews from The Rescue Truck assisted with debris cleanup and fluids leaking while Rostraver/West Newton EMS evaluated patients.  E-80 (North Belle Vernon) also assisted at the scene after receiving a vicinity alarm for the same incident.
   

HEAD-ON MVA ON ROUTE 981
5/26/09-- Two cars collided near the entrance to Cedarbrook Golf Course on Route 981.  The Rescue Truck arrived and sent personnel to assist EMS with patient stabilization.  Crews also cleared debris from the road and assisted with traffic control.  One patient involved in the head-on crash was seriously injured and taken by Rostraver EMS to a Pittsburgh hospital.

CRASH AT ALLEN'S CROSSROADS
5/22/09-- The Rescue Truck was dispatched for a vehicle accident at Rostraver Road and Finley Road.  Fire personnel assisted EMS at the scene and moved to a landing zone at the Amcel Center after paramedics requested air transport for the victim.  STAT MedEvac transported the patient to a Pittsburgh hospital.  While at the scene, a passerby reported wires pulled down by a truck at Rostraver Road and Pricedale Road.  Fire crews assisted Rostraver Police with traffic control until PennDOT arrived to close the road.

KITCHEN FIRE AT DAIRY QUEEN
5/13/09-- A small fire broke out in the kitchen of Dairy Queen, 5110 Route 51.  The fire was contained by staff in the cooking area and Engine 105's crew assisted with ventilation in DQ and adjacent Dunkin' Donuts.  A crew from Truck 105 also went to the roof to check for extension in the roof vent.  Stations 103 (Collinsburg) and 31 (Webster) assisted at the scene.  No injuries were reported and crews cleared in less than one hour.

 


PEDESTRIANS STRUCK ON RT 51
5/7/09-- Two pedestrians were flown to a Pittsburgh trauma center after being struck by a vehicle on Route 51 at Route 981.  The Rescue Truck provided lighting at the scene while EMS packaged the patients and police conducted their investigation.  Station 17 (Smithton) assisted at the landing zone.
  

MOCK CRASH AT BVA HS
5/7/09-- Rostraver Central VFC, along with Rostraver Police, Rostraver/West Newton Emergency Services, Station 31 (Webster) and Station 103 (Collinsburg), participated in a mock vehicle crash at the Belle Vernon Area High School.  The crash was staged by the BVA S.A.D.D. Club as a part of their spring prom week.  Fire crews extricated victims from 2 vehicles, R/WNES handled patient care, and RPD "arrested" parties involved in the crash.  LifeFlight also sent a helicopter to simulate the transport of a seriously injured victim.

WalmartSUPPORTS SUBSTATION
4/30/09-- The Walmart Foundation has made a generous donation on behalf of the Rostraver Walmart Supercenter and Manager Jim Lowe to support the Finley Road Substation project.  The contribution will help offset the costs involved with adding Squad 105, the engine housed in the new station, to our fleet.  The new substation, being constructed on the property of the Amcel Center, will benefit the commercial area Walmart calls home with improved response times.  Thanks to the Rostraver store for their generosity!

BARN DESTROYED BY FIRE
4/16/09-- Township companies battled a fire involving a barn on McKenery Drive.  The fire engulfed the barn and an adjoining shed, but did not spread to any occupied structures.  Crews used portable monitors and the masters streams of Truck 105 and a ladder truck from Station 31 (Webster).  Station 139 (Washington Twp) responded for a tanker assist.  The fire was immediately considered suspicious, due to the lack of utilities in the structure.  Rostraver Police have made arrests for arson and related charges in the case.  No injuries were reported.

DONATION HELPS PETS
4/4/09-- The Webster Beagle Club and Riverside Veterinary Hospital of Elizabeth have donated pet oxygen masks to the Rostraver Central VFC.  The masks will allow personnel to administer aid to pets involved in fires.  The equipment will be carried on all Rostraver Central apparatus.  Thanks to our neighbors for their generous donation!

SQUAD 105 IN SERVICE
3/23/09-- The long-awaited substation at the Amcel Center on Finley Road is now in operation.  Squad 105, a 1982 Seagrave engine, will be housed at the new station, tasked with protecting the southern areas of the township.  RCVFC officials are finalizing plans with Gordon One LLC for construction of the permanent station.  Preliminary plans include a two-bay station with helipad.  Thanks to Mr. Gordon and his staff!

TRUCK 105 ON FITZ HENRY FIRE
3/22/09-- Truck 105 assisted on a well-involved house fire at 109 Alley Road in the Fitz Henry section of South Huntingdon Township.  First arriving units from 17 (Smithton) and 107 (Turkeytown) established a water supply and pulled lines to protect exposures.  An interior attack was attempted, but crews could not make progress.  Truck 105 and Squrt 17 put master streams in operation, extinguishing the bulk of the fire.
  
BASEMENT FIRE, WEDDELL DR
3/21/09-- A house at 524 Weddell Drive was damaged by an early morning basement fire.  First alarm companies were dispatched just after 7am with occupants reporting a possible chimney fire.  E-103 (Collinsburg) arrived first with smoke coming from the attic area.  Truck 105 arrived next, laddered the roof, and sent a crew to the interior.  A fire was quickly knocked down in the basement with minor extension.  No injuries were reported.
   

REDUCTION ROAD BRUSH FIRE
3/18/09-- South Huntingdon Twp. companies were dispatched to Reduction Road near the County Fire Training Center.  First arriving units from 17 (Smithton) found 6 acres involved and requested additional brush trucks and tankers.  Brush 105 assisted with controlling the fire along a wooded area while Engine 105 pulled a bumper line to douse hot spots in the woods.  Crews remained on scene approximately 1 hour.
     

FIRST DUE BRUSH FIRE
3/7/09-- Stations 105 and 31 were dispatched for a field on fire next to 224 Nichols Hill Road.  The homeowner had been burning yard waste outside when the fire spread to the adjacent property.  Brush and Engine 105 arrived to find approximately 3 acres burning and spreading due to windy conditions.  Crews worked to contain the perimeter and held the fire to approximately 5 acres with no exposures.  Brush trucks from 31 and 103 helped to work the brush fire.  Crews remained on scene approximately 90 minutes.

TRAILER FIRE IN COLLINSBURG
3/1/09-- Just after 8am, fire departments were alerted for a trailer on fire on Twilight Drive, Voyager Estates.  E-103 (Collinsburg) was the first to arrive, confirming a working fire and making an interior attack.  E-105's crew arrived and assisted with ventilation and checking for extension.  No injuries were reported.  The fire is under investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal.

1 FLOWN FROM FORWARD TWP MVA
2/27/09-- A passing motorist stopped at Station 105 reporting an accident on Route 51 near the Allegheny County line.  The Rescue Truck immediately went enroute, finding the accident in Allegheny County near The Red Caboose.  The vehicle had been traveling north, crossed the median, and rolled several times coming to rest in the southbound lanes.  Personnel assessed and began to stabilize the vehicle's occupant, who was ejected.  Jefferson Hills EMS arrived and requested a helicopter to the scene.  R-105's crew turned the scene over to Gallatin-Sunnyside and Elizabeth personnel and moved to handle a landing zone just south of the scene.  LifeFlight flew the patient to a Pittsburgh hospital.
   

STATE RECOGNIZES RCVFC
2/21/09-- The Rostraver Central VFC has been recognized by the Office of the State Fire Commissioner as a Participating Department in the Fire Fighter Certification Program.  This recognition notes that a qualifying portion of the active membership has attained professional accreditation through the Commonwealth.

WEBSTER HOLLOW HOUSE FIRE
2/18/09-- Township companies were alerted at 10:39am for a house on fire at 802 Webster Hollow Road.  Engine 105, the 2nd due engine, arrived first and stretched an attack line.  Crews located the fire in the basement and had it quickly controlled.  Personnel from 31 (Webster) and 103 (Collinsburg) assisted with ventilation, overhaul, and checking for extension.  No injuries were reported.

QUICK STOP ON TRAILER FIRE
2/16/09-- A mobile home at 216 Albee Drive was damaged by an afternoon fire.  The Rescue Truck responded direct on the alarm, returning from a crash on Route 201.  Crews from Rescue and Engine 105 made an aggressive interior attack, controlling the fire within 15 minutes.  Station 103 (Collinsburg) arrived next, provided a RIT crew and assisted with overhaul.  Personnel from E-80 (North Belle Vernon) also assisted with overhaul and cleanup.  Elizabeth Twp. E-147 covered Station 105 during the fire.
     

WEATHER CAUSES DAMAGE IN TWP
2/12/09-- Strong winds and a line of thunderstorms caused damage throughout Western PA and Rostraver Township was no exception.  Crews from Station 105 handled nearly 20 storm-related calls ranging from power lines down to damaged buildings.  The most serious damage occurred at 455 Timms Lane, where a section of roof was blown from a house.  Fire personnel used tarps to secure the building from further damage and disconnected utilities.  No injuries were reported in any incidents.

HEAD-ON MVA, FELLS CHURCH RD
2/10/09-- Fire Dispatch alerted Station 105 for an MVA on Fells Church Road near Belle Vernon Area High School.  R-105 arrived to find two cars involved in the roadway.  EMS requested assistance with access to a patient confined in the vehicle.  Command requested Station 31 to set up a landing zone at the school campus.  Crews removed the drivers side of the vehicle, allowing EMS to extricate the patient.  No helicopter services were available due to weather conditions, and E-31 was returned.
     

ROUTE 51 CRASH INJURES 1
1/21/09-- The Rescue Truck was dispatched to Route 51 at Finley Road for an MVA with Injuries.  On arrival, crews discovered a patient confined, but self-extricating.  Fire personnel assisted with debris clean-up and traffic control until the vehicles were towed.  Rostraver/West Newton EMS transported one patient from the scene.
     

ASSIST ON WEBSTER ENTRAPMENT
1/18/09-- After another snow squall coated township roads, The Rescue Truck was alerted to assist Station 31 (Webster) on an MVA with Entrapment on Route 906 near Harriott Avenue.  Station 192 (Gallatin-Sunnyside) also assisted at the scene, after receiving a vicinity call from Allegheny 911.  Crews stabilized the vehicle and performed a full roof removal.  Rostraver/West Newton EMS transported the lone occupant with non-life threatening injuries.  Engine 105 handled an additional accident on Route 906 in Gibsonton during the incident.
