CHRISTMAS IN ROSTRAVER
12/24/06-- In the annual Christmas Eve tradition, Santa Claus made his rounds through the "Jewel of the Valley".  The Jolly Old Elf spread around plenty of holiday cheer and treats to all the good boys and girls.  Instead of the usual sleigh, Santa parked his reindeer and hitched a ride on Ladder 105.  Thanks to CSC Insurance Options for sponsoring this year's treats! 

 


NOONTIME CRASH LEAVES 1 DEAD
12/26/06-- Rescue 105 was dispatched for an accident with entrapment on Route 51 South at Fells Church Road.  Chief 105 arrived first with the medics and confirmed entrapment in one vehicle with an unresponsive patient.  The Rescue crew quickly deployed the spreaders and cutters and went to work preparing for a roof removal, while Squad 105 was called to winch the second, now unoccupied vehicle back, allowing access to the patient.  Once the truck was moved, a rapid door removal was completed, freeing the patient.  R/WNES planned a transport to the LifeFlight base at Rostraver Airport, but due to her unstable condition, they diverted to Jefferson Regional Medical Center.  Despite their best efforts, she was pronounced in the ER.  Station 31 (Webster) assisted with manpower at the scene.  105 units worked traffic control at the scene for approximately 4 hours while County Detectives and a PSP accident reconstructionist assisted Rostraver Police with the investigation.

CHIMNEY FIRE IN 1st DUE

12/16/06-- Shortly before noon, a chimney fire was reported at 212 Nichols Hill Road.  Upon arrival, Captain 105-1 called a working chimney fire.  The Ladder 105 crew laddered the roof and began to apply extinguishing agent while clearing the burning build-up.  The Engine crew, along with Webster, worked the bottom side, clearing debris and checking the basement for hazards.  Collinsburg was sent to the attic to check for extension, finding none.  Crews worked approximately one hour without incident and kept the fire confined to the flue.

JAMMED DOOR BRINGS RESCUE 105
12/15/06-- Township police called the Rescue truck to an evening accident at the Route 201/51 intersection.  The rear-end collision had left both rear doors jammed, with a small child secured in her safety seat.  Hurst® spreaders were deployed and quickly popped the door, giving the medics access to evaluate the child.  105 personnel remained on scene assisting Car 643 with hazards and traffic.

12/14/06-- A horrific crash claimed the life of a local teen and left another recovering in Allegheny General's Shock Trauma Center.  The accident happened at the intersection of Fells Church Road and Comanche Drive.  According to police, the driver lost control while cresting a hill and struck a tree, leaving the vehicle on its side.  Chief 105 arrived first andRescue 105's crew works to extricate reported heavy entrapment.  The Rescue crew immediately went to work partially removing the roof and, with assistance from Webster's rescue, using hydraulic rams to push the front-end wreckage away from the patients.  When the first victim's entrapment was resolved, he was extracted with multiple injuries and transferred to a waiting LifeFlight helicopter.  Unfortunately, the second victim had already succumbed to his injuries.  Rescue 147 (Central) was called for standby while 105 & 31 assisted Rostraver Police and the Westmoreland County Detectives Bureau with the investigation and the County Coroner with victim removal.

12/12/06-- The Rescue truck was called to a morning entrapment on Route 51.  Two cars collided in front of Bill's Golfland leaving one patient confined with serious injuries.  Removal was made through the available drivers door and Rostraver/West Newton EMS took the patient to Rostraver Airport to be transferred to LifeFlight.  105 assisted Township police with cleanup and traffic control.  Rescue 31 (Webster) filled Station 105 during the accident.  Route 51 southbound traffic was diverted for approximately one hour.

6 FLOWN IN ROUTE 51 CRASH
Post-extrication view of the civilian vehicle involved12/9/06-- Seven people were injured in a late evening accident on Route 51 at McKenery Drive involving a car and State Police cruiser.  Three of the six occupants of the car were ejected and two others were extricated by the Rescue 105 crew.  The rapid extrication required 2 door removals, roof removal, and a dash lift, which was accomplished in less than 10 minutes.  Rescue skills were fresh after a morning extrication drill that was held at 105 earlier in the day.  Both lanes of Route 51 were closed while Engine 105 handled the landing area, which simultaneously accommodated six helicopters from LifeFlight and STAT MedEvac.  All six of the civilian victims received severe injuries and were transported to the 3 Pittsburgh traumaSix helicopters land on Route 51 centers.  The Trooper involved was taken to Mon Valley Hospital for evaluation.  Station 31 assisted with scene hazards and traffic control while Rescue 147 filled Station 105.  147 handled one minor crash on Rostraver Road during their standby.  Route 51 South was closed for approximately 6 hours while the accident was reconstructed.  Rescue and Engine 105 provided lighting for the PSP R&I team.  The circumstances of the accident remain under investigation.

CENTRAL & CENTRAL PRACTICE HURST SKILLS
One car down... two to go...
12/9/2006-- The FIRE Station, local Hurst dealer, sponsored an extrication drill at Station 105.  Members from Rostraver Central, Central of Elizabeth Twp, and Elrama practiced their extrication skills and learned some new techniques with the latest tools on the Hurst demo trailer.  Thanks to Starr Auto Service and Jamie Farquhar for the practice cars.  And thanks again to Pat Moore for your expertise and equipment.

105 ASSISTS ON WOODS FIRESquad 105 works the perimeter
12/6/06 -- Just after 2 p.m., local departments were dispatched for a brush fire on Stahl Road in South Huntingdon Twp.  Upon arrival, Chief 17 reported an approximate 100x100 area well involved spreading into a wooded area.  Mutual aid was requested, including Squad and Engine 105.  Crews from Central and Scottdale worked to control and Engine 105 supplies waterextinguish the fire to one side, while Smithton, Turkeytown and others worked the other areas.  Engine 105 supplied water to the Squad and companies at the head of the fire.  Crews returned in service after approximately 2 hours of work.

SQUAD 105... UPDATED AND IMPROVED
Squad 105 is now equipped with a Hale/Sabre skid unit, including a 150-gallon tank and Scotty around-the-pump foam proportioner with 5-gallon Class A foam tank.  The truck has also been outfitted with a 8000 lb. Warn winch for off-road situations.

FF Visnich handing out Halloween treats10/28/06 -- Rescue 105 was alerted for a tractor trailer overturned on Route 981 in South Huntingdon Twp.  When first-arriving crews determined there were no major hazards and no entrapment, the Rescue Truck was moved to cover Station 17.  While there, the guys from 105 helped with the annual Smithton Halloween Parade and treat handout.
