CRASH TIES UP FELLSBURG
TRAFFIC
5/20/11-- Two
cars collided at the intersection of Fellsburg Road and Fells Church Road,
with one coming to rest in the parking lot of the Willow Agency.
Rostraver EMS evaluated the occupants of the vehicles and provided
treatment. Personnel from Station 105 cleared debris and assisted with
traffic control while Rostraver Police gathered information. All
parties involved refused EMS transport. Traffic was restricted in
Fellsburg for approximately 30 minutes while the vehicles were removed.

ONE FLOWN IN RT 51 ACCIDENT
5/6/11-- One
patient was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital and a second treated locally
following a collision on Route 51 at Fellsburg Road. Rescue 105's crew
assisted EMS with removing the patients from the vehicles and controlled
hazards. Rostraver/West Newton EMS called LifeFlight to transport the
more critical patient and Engine 105 set up a landing zone at Station
105. Fellsburg Road was closed at Route 51 and Route 51 South was
limited to one lane until the wreckage was removed.

HEAD-ON CRASH TRAPS ONE,
INJURES TWO
5/2/11-- Just
after 6am, two vehicles collided in the 1600 block of Rostraver Road.
The driver of the pickup truck self-extricated, but the driver of the sedan
was confined with lower-body trauma and required extrication. Rescue
105's crew used the Hurst® Jaws of Life rescue system to perform a full
drivers side removal. The patient was transferred to the care of
Rostraver paramedics, who transported to the LifeFlight base at Rostraver
Airport for a flight to a Pittsburgh trauma center. Fire crews
controlled leaking fluids and removed debris from the roadway. Route
201 was closed between Stoneybrook Drive and Sandstone Way for approximately
1 hour while Rostraver Police conducted their investigation.

SQUAD & TRUCK RESPOND TO
ARNOLD CITY FIRE
4/27/11-- A
house in Arnold City, Washington Twp, was damaged by a late evening
fire. Stations 105 and 80 (North Belle Vernon) and a Rapid
Intervention crew from 11 (Sutersville) were activated to assist the Fayette
County companies. An engine from 173 (Fayette City) arrived first and
held the fire to a 2nd floor bedroom. Personnel from 105 assisted with
salvage, overhaul, and ventilation. No injuries were reported in the
fire. The State Police Fire Marshal was contacted by 139 (Washington
Twp) to investigate. Units from 105 cleared after nearly 2 hours on
scene.

STORAGE BUILDING FIRE @
SMITH FARM
4/26/11-- An
afternoon fire caused moderate damage to a storage building at the Smith
Farm on Piersol Road. Engine 105's crew stretched a line to attack the
fire. Upon discovering flammable liquids fueling the fire, a 2nd line
was deployed with an inline foam eductor. The bulk of the fire was
knocked down and a blanket of foam was applied to control the liquid fuel
fire. The fire was determined to be accidental and no injuries were
reported. Engine 31 (Webster) assisted with water supply.

POLE SHEARED W/INJURIES IN
FELLSBURG
4/24/11--
A vehicle traveling on
Fells Church Road caused two incidents Sunday afternoon. According to
eyewitness reports, the vehicle struck a pickup truck at the Fellsburg Road
intersection then continued approximately 1500 feet south where it struck a
utility pole. Police arrived at the latter location and reported the
driver confined by the fallen pole. The Station 105 crew split to
handle the two crash scenes. Personnel at the initial location
assisted with patient assessment and packaging as well as traffic
control. Rescue 105's crew assisted the driver from the vehicle at the
second scene, after it was determined that she could safely exit, and
transferred her for EMS evaluation. Rostraver Police are investigating
the cause of the incident. Fells Church Road was closed near Chickee
Lane until West Penn Power could replace the destroyed pole.

AFTERNOON CRASHES TIE UP
ROUTE 201
4/22/11--
At 3pm, Rescue 105 was
dispatched for a MVA with injuries on Route 201 at Val's Car Wash. The
Rescue Truck arrived to find a rear-end collision with several
injuries. Crews assisted EMS with patient stabilization and
extrication and helped the Township police set up traffic patterns.
Rostraver/West Newton EMS transported 3 patients to local hospitals with
minor to moderate injuries. Route 201 was limited to one lane in each
direction for approximately 30 minutes. Just after returning, Station
105 was alerted for another crash on Route 201 in front of McDonald's.
While enroute, the alarm was updated on reports of a patient confined.
Rescue 105's crew made access to the patient without mechanical assistance
and aided EMS once again. EMS transported 2 injured occupants and
treated a 3rd on scene.

TRUCK ASSISTS ON MONESSEN
FIRE
4/14/11-- Truck
105 assisted on a fire that damaged a house on Reed Avenue in
Monessen. First arriving units from 81 found a fire in a 2nd floor
bedroom and initiated an aggressive attack. Chief 81-1 (Altemara)
ordered Truck 105 to set up on Side "A" and ventilate over the
fire room on Side "D". Crews from 105 also assisted with
overhaul. No injuries were reported in the fire. The State
Police Fire Marshal was called to investigate. Truck 105 returned
after approximately 1 hour on scene.

CRASH & EXTRICATION ON RT 201
4/6/11--
Shortly after clearing
two crashes that required no fire department intervention, Rostraver Police
reported a rollover accident with entrapment on Rostraver Road near Virginia
Drive. Engine 105 & Rescue 105 arrived and found two occupants
confined in a full-size pickup truck on its side. After stabilizing
the vehicle and removing the windshield, one of the occupants
self-extricated. Rescue 105's Hurst® Rescue System was then used to
perform a roof removal, giving paramedics access to the driver. The
patient was immobilized and transported to a local hospital. All fire
units cleared in approximately 30 minutes.

FINLEY ROAD CRASH INJURES
ONE
3/29/11--
One person was injured
in a morning crash on Finley Road near Spring Road. The driver of the
vehicle lost control and went over an embankment adjacent to I-70.
Rostraver/West Newton EMS transported the driver to Mon Valley Hospital with
non-priority injuries. Fire crews checked for hazards and cleared
after a short time on scene. Rostraver Police are investigating the
cause of the accident.

CHAIN-REACTION CRASH ON I-70
3/28/11-- A
driver that struck the rear of a construction vehicle doing routine
maintenance along I-70 caused a second accident that blocked the westbound
lanes. The first vehicle struck the protective crash barrier mounted
to the rear of the trailing vehicle in the work convoy and was left disabled
in the road. A tractor trailer hauling a water tanker approximately
1/8 mile behind the original crash could not come to a stop and struck the
rear of a tri-axle truck hauling coal. No serious injuries were
reported in either collision. Fire crews worked to control leaking
engine fluids from the commercial vehicle crash and assisted PennDOT with
roadway cleanup. The PA State Police from the Rostraver Barracks are
investigating the incident. I-70 West was closed for over 1 hour
during the incident.

TWO TRAPPED BY WIRES IN RT 201 CRASH
3/27/11--
Two occupants of a
vehicle that crashed along Rostraver Road near Piersol Road were transported
to a Pittsburgh trauma center just before 2am. The vehicle lost
control and crashed into a utility pole in the yard of 1501 Rostraver Road,
bringing live electric wires down onto the car and cracking the pole.
Crews stood by until West Penn Power de-energized the lines before securing
the vehicle. Rostraver/West Newton EMS transported both patients.

HAVOC CAUSED BY UNSEASONABLE T-STORM
3/23/11-- As
an EF-2 Tornado was tearing a path through Hempfield and Sewickley
Townships, an additional wave of thunderstorms moved through Rostraver
Township. The strong winds brought down trees throughout Station 105's
coverage area, with most of the damage concentrated around the Todd Farm
area. The storm overturned Anden Auto's office trailer and blew a
storage shed onto Route 51 at Pine Valley Lane. Trees fell onto two
adjacent homes on the 600 block of Todd Farm Road, bringing down live power
lines. Todd Farm Road was also closed just off of Ridge Road by a
large tree down on wires. Ridge Road was closed until trees could be
cleared from several different locations. In all, Rostraver Central
handled 23 incidents over approximately 2½ hours during the storm.
Luckily, no injuries were reported in Rostraver or the tornado ravaged area.

BEDROOM FIRE ON LEE DR
3/21/11-- An
unattended candle caused a bedroom fire at 125 Lee Drive. The
Rostraver Twp. companies and Station 80 (North Belle Vernon) were dispatched
on the alarm. Quint 80 and Squad 105 arrived first and found the fire
extinguished. Crews checked for extension and ventilated the
house. The fire started when an unattended candle fell to the floor
and caught adjoining bedding and other items on fire. No injuries were
reported and Rescue 11 (Sutersville) responded for Rapid Intervention.

SEVERAL ACRES BURN IN BRUSH FIRE
3/20/11--
Station 105 responded to
a brush fire on property off of Pine Valley Lane. First arriving units
found approximately 2 acres burning and requested Brush 17 (Smithton) to
assist. The fire originated from a controlled fire the resident had
started to dispose of waste and quickly spread to the adjoining brush.
Two engines from 105 and one from 17 were on scene for water supply and
Rostraver/West Newton EMS provided a standby ambulance. The fire was
controlled in approximately 30 minutes and no injuries were reported.

ELECTRICAL FIRE, SALEM CHURCH RD
3/20/11-- Township
companies responded to 361 Salem Church Road for an electrical fire.
Engine 105 arrived first and found an electrical outlet on fire in the
kitchen. Crews from 105 and 103 (Collinsburg) disconnected power,
checked for extension, and ventilated smoke from the house. Engine 31
(Webster) stood by at the hydrant for water supply. Rescue 11 (Sutersville)
provided a Rapid Intervention crew. No injuries were reported.

1 EXTRICATED FROM TYROL BLVD CRASH
3/20/11-- Shortly
after clearing an overturned vehicle on Fellsburg Road, Station 105 along
with the Township companies and Station 80 (North Belle Vernon) were
dispatched to an automatic fire alarm at Tractor Supply Company on Finley
Road. While enroute, an MVA was reported on the 800 block of Tyrol
Boulevard. Monessen Police arrived on scene reporting 1 female
trapped. Engine 105 diverted from the fire alarm, leaving the incident
to Squad 105 and Quint 80, and responded with Rescues 31 (Webster) and 81-2
(Monessen Hilltop) to the crash. Engine 105 arrived first and found a
female that had been ejected from the drivers seat inverted into the
passenger side footwell. Crews deployed the Hurst® ML-32 spreaders
and O-150 cutters to remove a door and displace the dash. Rostraver
EMS transported the patient to a landing zone on Monongahela Street in
Monessen. Rostraver Police are investigating the cause of the crash.

VEHICLE STRIKES HOUSE ON RT 201
3/12/11--
A driver escaped major
injury after losing control of a vehicle and striking a house on Rostraver
Road at Indian Hill Road. The vehicle crossed through a yard and
landed a glancing blow to a nearby residence. Fire personnel assessed
the building for structural damage and secured the vehicle while EMS
evaluated the driver. Rostraver Police are investigating the crash.

ENTRAPMENT ON VERNON DRIVE
3/8/11-- Stations
103 (Collinsburg) and 82 (West Newton) were dispatched for a vehicle into a
creek with entrapment on Vernon Drive near Rolling Hill Farm Drive.
Units from 103 arrived and confirmed 1 patient entrapped, requesting Rescue
105 added to the alarm. Crews from 103 & 82 stabilized the vehicle
and personnel worked in the creek to remove the vehicle's roof using cutters
from Rescue 103 and the Hurst® X-Tractor cutters from Rescue 105.
Rostraver EMS transported the injured female to a landing zone set up by
Engine 105 at the Church of St. Anne on Rostraver Road.

MAN KILLED BY FALLING TREE
3/6/11--
105 units were alerted
for a unconscious man pinned by a fallen tree at 210 Nicholls Hill
Road. The Rescue Truck's crew used an on-site ATV to quickly access
the scene and extricated the man using a chain saw. As it was
determined the incident had happened earlier, EMS and police summoned the
Coroner's Office. Crews used Station 105's Polaris Ranger ATV to
transport lighting to the scene and extract the body from the remote
location on the property. The investigation determined the incident
was accidental.

CHIMNEY FIRE IN WEBSTER
2/23/11-- Station
105 was dispatched to assist Station 31 (Webster) at 514 Webster Hollow Road
for a reported TV on fire. Engine 105 arrived first and determined the
homeowner's report was incorrect, discovering a fire in the home's
chimney. Truck 105 deployed to the roof and used dry chemical powder
to extinguish the fire in the flue. Crews checked for extension and
extinguished the fire in the wood burning furnace.

KNOX AVE HOUSE FIRE, MONESSEN
2/18/11--
As units were clearing
an MVA on the Vance DeiCas Highway and subsequent landing zone at the Finley
Road substation, Chief 81 (Hepple) requested Truck 105 for a working house
fire at 650 Knox Avenue in Monessen. Truck 105 responded from the
Fellsburg station, while Rescue and Brush 105 brought manpower from the
previous incidents. Upon arrival, 105 personnel were assigned Rapid
Intervention duties. Quint 80 (North Belle Vernon) also responded and
handled ventilation tasks. The fire was quickly controlled by the
Monessen companies and 105 units cleared within 30 minutes.

TWO EXTRICATED ON BROAD AVENUE
2/15/11-- Two
patients were flown to Pittsburgh trauma centers after an accident on Broad
Avenue near Moose Lodge #209. Stations 80 (North Belle Vernon) and 140
(Belle Vernon) arrived first after the incident was originally reported in
North Belle Vernon and stabilized the vehicle, which came to rest on its
side trapping the two occupants. Rescue 105 deployed the Hurst® MOC
Ultra and X-Tractor cutters to remove the roof. Fire personnel
assisted in transferring the patients to waiting paramedics from Rostraver
and Mon Valley EMS. Station 139 (Washington Twp) set up a landing zone
at Station 80. Rescue 31 (Webster) also responded and assisted with
cleanup.

SHED FIRE IN WEBSTER
2/10/11--
Township companies were
alerted for a shed on fire at Railroad & Wall Streets in Webster.
Engine 105 arrived first and deployed a line to control a small fire in a
storage shed. The fire was contained to the door and adjacent framing
and did not spread to the contents. The building had no utilities and
the cause was undetermined. Engine 31 (Webster) stood by at a nearby
hydrant for water supply. Rostraver Police were investigating the
circumstances of the incident and attempting to locate the property owner to
secure the building.

SNOW AGAIN CAUSES MULTIPLE CRASHES
2/2/11-- A
blast of snow caused 4 vehicle accidents over a span of approximately 2
hours in Rostraver Twp. The first was a vehicle into the creek along
the 500 block of Webster Hollow Road. Rescue 105 responded with
Station 31 (Webster) and assisted EMS at the scene. The Rescue then
responded to a landing zone at the Webster Ballfield on Route 906 where a
medical helicopter transported the victim from the Webster Hollow
crash. During that incident, Engine 105 responded to an overturned
vehicle with 1 patient trapped on Rostraver Road near Virginia Drive.
The crew from 105 removed a door from the SUV and extricated the patient to
waiting EMS who transported the patient to a local hospital. After
6pm, The Rescue also responded to MVAs on Rehoboth Road and Webster Hollow
Road near Route 51. Earlier in the day, Station 105 had also handled
an overturned vehicle on Interstate 70, a natural gas odor on Laurel Drive,
and a fire alarm caused by a cooking accident on Ann Court, totaling 8 calls
for the day.

RT 51 MULTI-VEHICLE ACCIDENT
1/27/11-- Several
vehicles were involved in a collision on Route 51 near Pine Valley
Lane. Rescue & Squad 105 set up traffic patterns restricting 1
lane in each direction while crews controlled spills, removed debris, and
evaluated the occupants for minor injuries. Fire personnel remained on
scene while the vehicles were removed and PennDOT treated the area with
anti-icing material.

WINTER WEATHER MAKES FOR BUSY DAY
1/26/11--
A shot of winter weather
caused multiple incidents throughout the day for Station 105. The
morning began with an MVA on Johnson Avenue. The crash brought down
electrical wires that remained live and arcing, causing 1 house to be
evacuated. During that incident, Squad 105 responded to a possible
electrical fire at Marion Elementary School in Washington Twp. After
returning to the station, 105 was activated to assist Collinsburg with
traffic control for an MVA on Route 136 and shortly after for an MVA on
Route 51 at Route 981. Later in the afternoon, the fire alarm
activated at the Rostraver Square shopping center, caused by a damaged
detector in an occupancy being renovated. Lastly, the evening brought
an MVA at the Verizon Wireless/MedExpress building on Rostraver Road.
EMS arrived and reported 2 injuries, 1 patient entrapped. Rescue 105
performed a door removal and assisted EMS with patient extrication.

FIRE DESTROYS AUTO REPAIR SHOP
1/17/11--
Just before 11pm, a fire
was reported at Tri-County Tire, 171 Finley Road. Chief 105 arrived
first, reporting a well-involved fire, and ordered a defensive attack.
Squad 105 established a water supply to Truck 105 and Quint 80, which
extinguished the fire with their master streams. The entire building,
including 1 vehicle stored inside for service, was a complete loss. No
injuries were reported and the State Police Fire Marshal ruled the fire not
suspicious. Stations 103 & 31 also assisted at the scene.
Rescue 11 (Sutersville) provided a Rapid Intervention crew.
